On Sunday, January 3, 2010, Beit Knesset Feigenson will hold its Annual Gala Dinner Celebration. At this year's Dinner, we will honor two couples who exemplify community service: Nom and Jacob Jackson and Sara and David Eisen.

The Dinner will take place at Shemesh Ha'elah at 19:00. Once again, we will do everything possible to ensure that this year's Dinner is fun and innovative. A solid entertainment program will provide a fun-filled evening.

To maximize the benefits of this fundraising Dinner for Beit Knesset Feigenson, the Dinner Journal will NOT be distributed in print form. It will be a Virtual Journal that you can access from any Web browser. There will be several computers at the Dinner so that you can enjoy the Virtual Journal during the Dinner as well.

Honoring

Sara & David Eisen Sara and David Eisen made Aliyah in 1993 and lived in Pisgat Zeev for their first three years in Israel. Since their move to Nofei Aviv with the neighborhood’s inception in 1996, they have been involved in community building and maintenance on every level. David, an attorney from Miami who served in the IDF and earned his law degree at Hebrew University, is well-known in the neighborhood for his humor and his Torah. In fact, there was an entire film screened about him at an important Shul [er, Purim] event! He enjoys attending shiurim and talking Torah with Jews of every stripe. In addition to the legal expertise that he has provided throughout the years, David spent several years in charge of the laining roster at the Shul. He is willing to give a shiur or lead an oneg when needed, always with a catchy title and a smile. David has lent his many voices (and hats) to the family-style Megillah reading that so many of our younger members – and their parents- enjoy. Sara hails from Baltimore and is a writer by vocation and avocation. She has brought these skills to bear for many a Shul-related printed, spoken or e-mailed word, but her contributions of time and energy extend beyond her way with words to her ways with deeds. From her Vaad membership in the early years of the community to her recent extended stint in charge of youth programming, Sara figures out what needs doing and does it. She is behind the scenes at so many Shul functions, is welcomed into the spotlight on Purim, and her wit and style are apparent in whatever she does (even if it entails donning a burka!). In addition to their tireless work on behalf of the community, Sara and David have been kind enough to bolster the fledgling Kohen population of the Shul, with Avi (15), Doron (11), Shaqed (6) and Maor(4) . שרה ודוד אייזן עלו לארץ בתשנ"ג (1993) והתגררו בפסגת זאב שלש השנים. מאז שעברו לשכונתנו בתשנ"ז, כשהשכונה עוד היתה בחיתוליה, היו הם מעורבים ביסוד ובניית הקהילה בשכונה. דוד, עו"ד ממיאמי ששרת בצה"ל ורכש השכלתו האקדמאית באוניברסיטה העברית, ידוע בשכונה בהומור שלו, ובדברי התורה שלו. עדכדי כך שהוכן סרט שלם עליו בארוע קהילתי חשוב (פורים). דוד משתתף בשיעורים ונהנה לשוחח בדברי תורה עם כל יהודי ללא הבדל דת ומוצא. בנוסף לייעוץ המשפטי שדוד סיפק במהלך השנים וארגון קריאת התורה בבית הכנסת, הוא מוכן בכל עת להעביר שיעור או עונג, תמיד עם שם מפוצץ וחיוך. דוד גם מראה את כוחו הקולי (וגם את כובעיו) בקריאת המגילה המשפחתית שרבים מצעירי הקהילה וגם הכבר לא כל כך צעירים נהנים ממנה. שרה הגיעה מבולטימור והיא כותבת, כתבת וסופרת  במקצועה ובאופיה. היא מתשתמשת בתכונות אלו רבות למען הקהילה, אך תרומתה בזמן ומאמץ עולים עולים על תרומתה במילים. מאז ששרה היתה חברה בוועד השני שמיסד את הקהילה עד לאחרונה שסיימה פרק זמן לא קצר כאחראית פעילות הנוער בקהילה, היא מחפשת ומוצאת היכן צריכים מעשים ולא רק דיבורים ושם תמצא אותה. היא נמצאת מאחורי הקלעים של רבים מאירועי בית הכנסת והקהילה, אך מעמידה את עצמה באור בזרקורים רק פעם בשנה (גם עם לא מזהים אותה תחת ה"בורקה" והרעלה). מעבר למאמצים וההשקעה בקהילה דוד ושרה גם מגדילים את סגל הכהנים (המועט) בקהילה בעזרת בניהם אבי (15) דורון (11) שקד (6) ומאור (4).

Nom & Jacob Jackson Tonight’s co-honorees, Jacob and Nom Jackson (who, by the way, are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary tomorrow) have been pillars of our community from the very beginning. Jacob, a dentist originally from London, England, is the son of a community rabbi, which is very evident in his community leadership skills, as well as his ability to perform almost any shul function! Nom, a biochemist originally from Melbourne, Australia, is a whirlwind of activity and accomplishments – really a special person who does it all with grace and ease. They both made aliyah as singles and met in the “bitzah” in Jerusalem. They have four beautiful daughters – apparently Jacob’s lot in life is to be surrounded by women, considering he grew up as the only boy in a family with three sisters! Jacob and Nom were the driving force in establishing the youth minyan at our shul. For the first few years, they held the minyan every other week in the living room of their house - Jacob leading and teaching the davening to the kids, and Nom making sure that all the logistics went smoothly and that the kiddushes were done properly. The Jacksons are also known for their incredible hospitality and for their unmatched party-making skills. Anyone who has ever been to one of their Purim parties can attest to that - by the way, the Rav and Yael have indicated that they are especially thrilled at the close proximity of their house to the Jackson’s house, especially on Purim night! Speaking of Purim, the Jackson’s were also in the forefront of establishing and continuing the highly revered tradition of our shul Purim shpiel, and anyone who has been to the shpiel knows how hard it is to compete against Jacob in a sheitel and a dress! When one thinks of the Jacksons, another thing that comes to mind is music. Not only is Jacob part of our shul’s world-renowned choir and a great baal tefilla, but he comes from an entire family of chazzanim and singers. You only have to walk past their house during Sukkot to hear the beautiful singing emanating from their sukkah. The Jackson’s also started the annual tradition of singing shirei eretz yisrael on Yom Ha’atzmaut in our neighborhood. Although Jacob shines in the limelight, Nom prefers the quiet touch. Until recently, she was the longest-running street rep in our community for the Chesed Committee. She is famous for her organizational skills and the ease with which she does everything, from gardening, to photography, interior design, cooking, hosting, painting – all with an ease and grace that can only be admired and envied. Every community needs a Jackson family and we can all be very thankful that Hashem saw fit to place Jacob and Nom in our midst. מכובדי הערב, ג'יקוב ונום ג'קסון – שדרך אגב חוגגים מחר את יום נישואיהם העשרים (עד מאה ועשרים) הם מעמודי התווך של הקהילה מתחילתה. ג'יקוב, רופא שיניים לונדוני במקור, הוא בנו של רב קהילה, דבר הניכר בכושר המנהיגות וביכולתו לבצע (והוא אכן ביצע) כל תפקיד בבית הכנסת! נום, ביוכימאית בהכשרתה במקור ממלבורן אוסטרליה, היא בעלת יכולת תכנון וביצוע לפרויקטים בתוך הקהילה והכל בחן ובקלות. שניהם עלו לארץ כרווקים ונפגשו בביצה הירושלמית. הרחיבו את משפחתם בארבע בנות יפיפיות – כנראה שנגזר על ג'יקוב לחיות תמיד מוקף בנשים בהתחשב בעובדה שהוא הבן היחידי עם שלש אחיות. ג'יקוב ונום, מעבר להישגיהם האחרים, היו הכח המניע בהקמת מנין הנוער בבית הכנסת. בשנים הראשונות המנין בסלון ביתם כשג'יקוב מדריך ומאמן את החזנים, ונום דואגת לכל הלוגיסטיקה ושהקידושים מאורגנים כראוי.   הג'קסונים ידועים כמארחים נהדרים וכמארגני מסיבות ללא מתחרים ועל כך יעידו כל המשתתפים במסיבות השונות. השמועה אומרת שהרב ויעל שמחים במיוחד על הקרבה לבית ג'קסון ובמיוחד בליל פורים! בנוסף הם גם המייסדים של ה-"פורים שפיל" הקהילתי הנודע והמוצלח וכל מי שהשתתף בשפיל יודע שאין על ג'יקוב עם מחשוף ופאה! כמשפחת ג'קסון מוזכרת אחד ההנושאים הראשונים שעולים הוא מוזיקה,שירה וחזנות. ג'יקוב הוא לא רק חזן נהדר וחבר במקהלת בית הכנסת, אלא הוא שייך למשפחת חזנים. כשעוברים ליד הסוכה שלהם בחג הזמירות נשמעות למרחקים. הג'קסונים גם מיסדו את ערב השירה בציבור של יום העצמאות שנהפך למסורת. ג'יקוב מושך את רוב אור הזרקורים לא בגלל שלנום לא מגיע אלא שהיא מעדיפה לעשות בצנעה. עד לאחרונה היא היתה נציגת ועדת החסד המכהנת את הזמן הארוך ביותר בשכונתינו. היא מפורסמת ביכולת הארגון ובקלות שבה היא מבצעת הכל –  גינון, צילום, עיצוב פנים, בישול, אירוח, ציור -  והכל בחן ובקלילות שרק ניתן להעריך ולהעריץ. כל קהילה צריכה משפחה כזאת ונשאר לנו רק להודות לקב"ה שאת נום וג'יקוב שיכן בשכונתינו.
